Main Monofilament and Braided Lines

The main monofilament line or braid is the primary link between the reel and the rest of the fishing setup, known as the 'rig'. It is a length of material wound onto the reel spool. The basic division is into monofilament lines and braided lines. Monofilament line is made from a single strand, usually nylon, and is characterized by a certain degree of stretch, meaning it can elongate. This elasticity helps to cushion fish runs. Braided line is woven from several thin synthetic microfibers. Unlike monofilament, it has almost zero stretch, which ensures high sensitivity for bite detection and direct contact with the fish. The choice between monofilament and braid depends on the fishing technique and the target fish. Important parameters include diameter, which affects casting distance and visibility in the water, and breaking strain (stated in kilograms), which determines how much load the material can withstand.
