Rhodium Plating

Rhodium plating is a process in which a thin layer of the precious metal rhodium is applied to the surface of jewelry. Rhodium belongs to the platinum group metals and is characterized by high hardness, durability, and a silvery-white luster. The application is done by electroplating, where the jewelry is submerged in a rhodium solution, and a continuous coating is formed on its surface using an electric current. This treatment protects the jewelry from scratching, oxidation, and subsequent tarnishing, which is typical for silver, for example. Rhodium gives a dazzling white color to white gold jewelry, which naturally has a slightly yellowish tint. Since rhodium is a hypoallergenic metal, it also reduces the risk of allergic reactions. The rhodium layer can wear off over time, especially with frequent wear, and to restore the original appearance, the plating needs to be reapplied.
