Headlamps

Modern headlamps generally use only LED as their light source. Let’s take a look at other parameters you should consider before purchasing.

Light output

Light output is measured in lumens (lm). The higher the value, the brighter the light. Some models have multiple brightness settings.

Here are a few examples of different light output level usage:

  • 100 lm – illuminating a basement, attic, or when you need some extra light when fixing your car
  • 100-400 lm  – night-time jogging, biking, camping and other outdoor activities
  • 400 lm  – extreme sports and professions (rescuers, hunters, climbers, etc.)

Beam distance

  • Beam distance is determined by light output and headlamp beam type.
  • Differently angled lamps can have drastically different beam distance even if their light output is identical. Once again, make sure you know what you want to use the headlamp for.

Lamp life 

  • Headlamps with high light output tend to have shorter run time or higher weight, since they have to accommodate either more batteries or one larger battery.
  • LEDs themselves have a lamp life of tens of thousands of hours, all the way up to one hundred thousand hours.

Power

  • The lightest and smallest headlamps with low light output are usually powered by button cells.
  • Most headlamps use AA or AAA batteries. They are inexpensive and easy to buy and replace.
  • Powerful headlamps are energy-intensive, so they are equipped with rechargeable batteries.

Other features

  • Increased mechanical durability – these headlamps are resistant against vibration and shock and are generally made of hard plastic, light and tough metal alloy, and can have rubberised components.
  • Water-resistant - resist fog and rain, but cannot be immersed in water.
  • Waterproof - can withstand immersion in water.
  • Tilting lamp - perfect for jogging or biking.
