Half-duplex mode means that a transceiver can both transmit and receive a signal, but not simultaneously. Users must take turns transmitting, which is the principle of alternating transmission and reception. When one user speaks, others can only listen. To initiate transmission, a button must be pressed and held, often referred to as PTT (Push-to-Talk). After releasing the button, the transceiver switches back to receive mode and can pick up a response from others. This communication method is typical for most common radio stations.
