Sensor Size 1/4"

A 1/4 inch sensor size refers to the physical dimensions of the chip inside a camera that is responsible for capturing light and converting it into a digital image. This specification, historically derived from the size of imaging vacuum tubes in television cameras, does not represent the exact diagonal of the chip but serves as a standardized designation for a size category. The sensor consists of millions of light-sensitive points called pixels. For a 1/4 inch sensor, which is among the smaller types, a certain number of pixels must fit onto the given area. If there are many pixels, the individual pixels are very small and can capture less light. This manifests particularly in poorer lighting conditions, for example indoors or at dusk, when more digital noise, an image defect similar to graininess, can appear in photos. Cameras with this sensor size therefore achieve optimal results primarily in daylight and in well-lit spaces.
