Phase detection

Phase detection is an autofocus technology used by digital cameras. Its principle involves splitting the light passing through the lens into two separate rays, which fall onto a specialized sensor. This sensor compares both images. If the captured object is not properly in focus, the images differ from each other. From this difference, the system can precisely and instantly calculate in which direction and by what distance the lenses in the objective need to be moved to achieve a sharp image. Thanks to this, this focusing method is very fast and targeted, as the camera does not have to gradually search for the correct focus position. Unlike the slower contrast detection method, which searches for the point with the highest contrast, phase detection knows the target immediately. Originally, this technology was typical for digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, where a separate focusing module handled it. Today, it is commonly integrated directly onto the main image sensor in mirrorless cameras and advanced mobile phones.
