Loop recording is a function that allows a dashcam to continuously record driving, even when its memory card is full. The camera records video in short, consecutive time segments, the length of which can usually be set, for example, to one, three, or five minutes. Once the memory is full, the device automatically deletes the oldest stored recording and records a new one in its place. This ensures that recording never stops due to lack of space. Important recordings, for example from an accident, are not deleted in the process. Their protection is handled by a so-called G-sensor. This shock sensor detects an impact or sudden braking and automatically locks the currently recorded file. Such a „locked“ file is protected against overwriting and remains stored on the card as evidence.
