The vacuum cleaner cannot be fully operated without the manufacturer's mobile app (only basic functions are available via Matter) and it refuses to work when the vacuum cleaner is not connected to the Internet, the manufacturer's cloud service. It can see the current battery status, so communication over the local network works. Plus, when it doesn't get to the cloud, it disconnects itself from WiFi after a while, so then Matter doesn't work either. All communication with the cloud service is encrypted and the manufacturer has gone to great lengths to make it impossible to "root" the device. As a result, this means that no one can audit what data the device collects and sends to China. As long as the device is connected to the Internet, the manufacturer (or whoever hacks its service) has full control over it and can turn it off or control it remotely at any time. A self-propelled device with LIDAR, with an RGB camera and microphone on the more expensive model, is ideal for abuse. This is very sensitive data, which has a high price on the black market, for advertising companies or intelligence services. They can also be used for espionage, and this is not just a hypothetical possibility - Chinese companies are required by law to cooperate with Chinese intelligence and allow them to do exactly that whenever the Chinese authoritarian government decides to do so (see https://nukib.gov.cz/download/uredni_deska/2025-09-03_Varovani_predavani-dat-podepsano. pd). There have also been countless cases where cloud services for IoT devices have been the target of hacking attacks, in which user data has been stolen. This unfortunately applies to all Roborock, Dreame and other Chinese vacuum cleaners. Samsung is unfortunately in a similar position, but the risk of being used for state espionage is inherently much lower. Eventually I returned the Roborock and got a Dreame X40 Ultra, which can load Valetudo. This replaces cloud services and allows the vacuum cleaner to be fully controlled over a local network, without access to the Internet.
