I wanted to try mesh, not that the original RT-AC66U B1 couldn't reach somewhere but in some parts of the house it was already like that and I also wanted to get a signal outside the building. I've also looked into tri-band but for my ISP speed, the wireless backbone of a dual-band router is sufficient.
For about three weeks "unfortunately" everything was ok, unfortunately because I probably would have returned it otherwise and waited for a more "fine-tuned" solution. I thought that basting and googling the best settings was over with the new routers but alas. After about three weeks, the connection started to have a terrible response, HO was almost impossible (outages and connecting via RD and doing something was a challenge...). I found that there were dropouts in the wireless connection between NODs, it took a few minutes of googling and the solution was to turn off the automatic channel width for 5Ghz and by testing I ended up at 80Mhz + I preferred to hard set the channels (I don't trust the automation of this router anymore). Since then ok, but I hope that some other FW will fix it, because mesh can do up to 160Mhz but automation is obviously having problems. On the other hand, mesh has its advantages, I have NODs in the corner of the building, always near the PC and the PC can be connected directly by cable to the NOD and so it has its "antenna" in the ideal position and always goes over 5Ghz.

WiFi can be scheduled to turn off at a specific time (independently for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz)
fully sufficient to cover two floors of a family house
low consumption - approx. 2.4kWh/month
management is possible via web interface (HTTP, HTTPS), SSH (including the possibility of logging in with a key) or Telnet - this was the key reason why I did not choose TP-Link DECO, which can be managed only via the mobile app and only after logging in to the account
the units are small and unobtrusive (the notification LED can be turned off completely)
availability of firmware updates

DHCP server is not available in AP mode (this is not common with other manufacturers)
the settings may not be completely intuitive for some people
