Dates are not all equally ripe. Some (the riper ones) are delicious, juicy and very sweet almost like jumbo. But there are lighter crispier bits that aren't as sweet - they could still stand a bit, but they're also good.
The advantage over jumbo is that they are not super-sweet, so you can eat more of them.

For me, the best dates you can easily buy now. They resemble Seeberger dates, which used to be available in Bill's but can no longer be bought. Against Medjool dates, they are drained, which adds 1000 points for me. Plus, Medjool are sometimes too overly sweet for me. Compared to cheaper alternatives, they are full of flavor, not dry and crumbly.
