DCF Format

The DCF format is a standard that specifies how digital cameras store and organize files on a memory card. The full name of this standard is “Design rule for Camera File system”. Its main goal is to ensure mutual compatibility between various devices, such as cameras, computers, printers, or digital photo frames. By adhering to these rules, a computer, for example, can easily find and display photos from the card, even if it was used in a camera from a different manufacturer. The DCF standard precisely defines the folder structure on the card, where the main folder for images and videos is always “DCIM”. Within this folder, further subfolders are then created. It also specifies rules for file naming, which ensure their uniqueness and easy identification.
