Car washing tips:
Improper washing is the main source of paint damage. Incorrect hand washing, or using automatic or brush car washes, scratches and damages the paintwork. Wash your car in a way that minimises the risk of paint damage. Only use your own trusted shampoo, not freely available shampoos of unknown origin and unverified cleaning properties.
Do not use washing-up liquids, household cleaners, touchless or active cleaners and foams, degreasers, solvents or other detergents. These cleaners are generally not gentle on the protective wax layer or the polishing oils on the paint surface; they dry it out and leave it unprotected. Unprotected paintwork will begin to degrade very quickly, showing signs of oxidation, loss of gloss and increased susceptibility to both mechanical and chemical damage. The water should be as close to the temperature of the bodywork as possible.
Use the 2-bucket method or a Meguiar's bucket with a Grit Guard insert. Do not use foam sponges or wash mitts with large, braided fibres. Sponges and mitts cannot effectively absorb dirt and can scratch the paint. Use a gentle wash mitt with very fine microfibre hairs or natural lambswool, which trap and absorb fine dirt. Always dry the car after washing. This prevents water spots caused by minerals in the water.
Active drying also prevents dust from settling again while it dries. For drying, use a high-quality, absorbent microfibre drying towel, such as the X1905 Meguiar's Supreme Drying Towel XL, X2000 Meguiar's Water Magnet or a natural X2100 Meguiar's Natural Chamois. Hard-to-reach areas can be dried with compressed air (be careful of potential oil contamination from the nozzle). Drying with a silicone squeegee is not recommended, as it can trap dirt and cause scratches on the paint. Meguiar's shampoo may not foam up when washing, but it still retains all its properties and gentleness. Always mix the shampoo into the water to prevent foam from overflowing the bucket as you fill it. It is not necessary to create an excessive amount of foam.
Recommended car washing procedure:
Rinse the car of loose dirt with a pressure washer, working from the bottom up. The lower parts of the car are the dirtiest, so the water works longest on these areas, soaking the dirt more effectively. Dirt from the upper parts runs down and helps to wash away loosened debris from the sills, wheels or undercarriage.
Wash the entire bodywork with shampoo from top to bottom, i.e., from the cleanest parts to the dirtiest. When you dip the mitt back into the bucket, always wash it out thoroughly to release all the dirt and prevent it from being transferred back onto the paint. Rinse the shampoo from the bodywork with a pressure washer, working from top to bottom. The running water will help remove shampoo from hard-to-reach places.
Finally, slowly rinse the bodywork again from top to bottom, this time with only a very thin stream of water without a pressure nozzle. This step can remove up to 90% of the remaining water from the paintwork and make subsequent drying easier. Dry the car using a high-quality, absorbent microfibre drying towel, such as the X1905 Meguiar's Supreme Drying Towel XL, X2000 Meguiar's Water Magnet or a natural X2100 Meguiar's Natural Chamois. If needed, boost the protective wax layer with one of Meguiar's quick waxes or Meguiar's Ultimate Fast Finish.
