Support and Protection Against Cyber Threats
Official support for Windows 10 ends on 14 October 2025. After this date, regular users will no longer receive bug fixes or security patches. The Microsoft Extended Security Updates ESU Year 1 licence extends the ability to receive important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center. This gives educational institutions more time to plan their migration to Windows 11 and continue to use their existing infrastructure. An un-updated operating system is often an easy target for malicious software. Regularly installing security packages helps prevent school network intrusions and protects sensitive user data. The system responds in a timely manner to discovered vulnerabilities in the code. Network administrators can effectively reduce the risk of a successful attack and the spread of malicious code within the local infrastructure. A condition for installing these updates is logging in to the device with an administrator account.
Registration Period and Multi-Computer Use
You can register for the ESU programme at any time until 12 October 2027. If a school purchases a licence later, it will also get retroactive access to previously released updates since the end of official support. Installation takes place via the standard route through the integrated Windows Update service. Administrators do not need to install any additional software to receive these fixes, saving them time on management. One package contains the right to deploy on multiple computers. Specifically, the updates can be activated on 10 different devices within the organisation that meet the technical requirements. This facilitates licence management and reduces the administrative burden on the IT department. The school only purchases the required number of packages according to the total size of its computer lab or the number of active teaching staff.
