How to choose a waffle maker?

Power consumption

  • Power consumption tells you about the device performance and how much electricity it consumes.
  • The general rule of the thumb is that the more powerful the appliance, the faster you can make your waffles.
  • The standard power consumption is around 1000W, which is perfectly suitable for most people.

Size

Determines how many waffles — and in what shape — you can make simultaneously. Most waffle makers are designed for 4 smaller or 1 large waffle. You can even choose the shape of the waffle hotplates. You can make square, round or even heart-shaped waffles.

Waffle hotplates

With hotplates, focus on their size, shape, and manufacturing quality. Ideal are hotplates with a non-stick surface, since the dough won't stick to them. High-quality plates ensure you will get evenly baked waffles and are also considerably easier to clean. Their surface should also be tough enough so that the Teflon layer doesn't get scratched and worn out too soon.

Dimensions and weight

If you plan to remove the waffle maker from the kitchen counter when it's not in use, focus on the dimensions and weight - you will need a light and portable device and some models can be surprisingly heavy. Most waffle makers can be stored in both horizontal and vertical positions.

Waffle maker functions

  • Adjustable temperature / adjustable thermostat - allows you to regulate the baking temperature.
  • Insulated handle - ensures you don't burn your hands when operating the device.
  • Overheat protection - a good safety feature to have. If there is a risk of overheating, the waffle maker will switch off automatically.
  • Indicator lights - inform you about the current state of the appliance (hotplate temperature, baking, waffles finished).
