The Synology RX418 is a great fit for any business and a secure solution for when you're running out of storage capacity. It's a storage expansion kit with 4 bays for 2.5/3.5" SATA III HDDs/SSDs. This allows you to easily add more storage space to select Synology RackStation devices. If a separate volume is created on this device, it can be used as a backup for your Synology RackStations. RAID volumes on the RackStation can be expanded without service disruption and without formatting the existing hard drives. In addition, the RX418 is capable of intelligently powering the connected server on or off, so no user intervention is required to activate power-saving or efficient operation.
The device offers the ability to instantly increase storage space once the existing drives in the server are full. Users can install 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives into the four available bays. The system detects the added drives immediately after they are physically inserted into the prepared slots. This way, you can expand existing disk storage volumes without interrupting network operation, giving users additional space to store large amounts of data.
The connection to the main server is made using the included eSATA cable. This connection method maintains a solid physical link between the two devices. The drives inside the expansion enclosure function as the server's internal storage without the need to install any additional software. System administrators configure the volumes in the DSM interface. Setting up the entire volume takes only a few minutes. The second option for using this device is to configure it as a separate backup destination. Separate volumes on these drives are used to store system backups from the main RackStation storage. In the event of a primary drive failure, you have a complete copy of your data on an independent physical device. This approach keeps data separate from the primary infrastructure. The backup processes run automatically in the background.
The device's operation meets the requirements for low power consumption in continuous use. Users can set up automatic hard drive hibernation after a defined period of inactivity in the DSM system. In this mode, consumption drops to 6.39W, saving on operating costs. Under normal load with drives installed, the unit consumes 23.26W. Automatic drive shutdown also extends their lifespan.
The manufacturer recommends installing genuine enterprise-class drives for stable operation. These drives undergo compatibility testing and show consistent performance under high load. The device fully supports 3.5" SATA Enterprise and Plus series drives. Users can also use 2.5" SSDs from this product group. Using hardware from a single manufacturer prevents incompatibility.
The 44mm height design meets standard requirements for mounting in server cabinets. The 290mm depth makes it easy to install even in smaller wall-mounted racks. Three built-in fans measuring 40 × 40mm handle the cooling of the internal space. These fans maintain an operating temperature between 5°C and 35°C. The entire chassis weighs 4.28kg and has a noise level of 25.1dB.
