The AMD Ryzen 5000 series is firmly anchored to the AM4 socket, similar to the first, second or third generation Ryzen processors. However, you need a motherboard with a matching chipset. AMD B550, A520 or X570 have official support. By the way, it is the clear choice for the vast majority of users. If you already have such a board, make sure that you have installed a new BIOS with AGESA 1.0.8.0 or newer (AGESA 1.1.0.0).
New Zen 3 cores
The major changes primarily occurred directly in the processor cores. The redesign of the internal layout of the CPU cores inside the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor is fundamental. They are now concentrated in 8-core CCX (Core Complex) blocks, which have direct access to the L3 Cache with twice the capacity.
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X delivers a massive performance boost
Clearly the most interesting benefit of the new Ryzen is the performance increase. This is really noticeable in the form of up to 19% IPC (number of instructions per CPU clock). This number came out for AMD as an average across 25 applications, so it's not an isolated increase in a pre-prepared situation.

The companion AMD Ryzen Master application offers comprehensive CPU health monitoring. In addition to monitoring all parameters, however, it is possible to tune the performance in great detail.
The supported memory type indicates which operating memory the processor can work with without problems. In practice, this primarily means the generation of modules - the most common today are DDR4 and the more modern DDR5. Each processor has precise limits, so if you try to insert a different type, the computer won't find the memory at all and won't start up.
The maximum number of channels expresses how many separate paths the processor can divide the communication with the RAM into. Most common home computers operate with two channels, so it is ideal to install two identical memory modules to double the speed. If the processor offers a dual-channel connection, it pays to always fit memory in pairs; otherwise, unused channels remain "empty" and performance is reduced.
