Caturra is a coffee variety that originated as a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety. It was discovered on a plantation in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil between 1915 and 1918. The name "Caturra" comes from a Guarani word meaning "small". This variety is characterised by its small plant size. Thanks to its small size and densely spaced branches, it can be planted close together, which increases the yield in a given area. Caturra contributed to the intensification of coffee cultivation, especially in Central America, where it was introduced in the 1940s. This variety also played an important role in the cultivation of coffee plants resistant to coffee leaf rust, contributing to the 'Catimor' family of cultivars. Red Caturra is characterised by its intense aroma and rich flavour profile. Yellow Caturra, on the other hand, is a delicate coffee variety with light yellow beans. It is characterised by a mild flavour profile.
Preparation
El Vergel coffee from Colombia will work well both in an espresso machine and with alternative brewing methods. Customise it according to your preferences and equipment! If you opt for pour-over methods, we recommend the classic V60 dripper, which will easily help to highlight the subtle red fruit notes of the coffee. Pour the water evenly (e.g., 5× 60g) at 30-second intervals. The water should completely seep through the coffee between each pour. If the water flows too slowly or too quickly, change the grind to coarser/finer. Remember to use soft, filtered water! 60g of coffee per 1 litre of water, water temperature 94°C.
