Pouches are basically canned cat food in a different package. The only real difference is quantity, as they contain only 1 to 2 servings. So why should (or shouldn’t) you buy cat food pouches?

Cat food pouches—pros

The food is tasty and juicy.
Manufactured in many different flavours.
There is no loss of taste and smell.
Easy storage.
Small pouches are easily portable and convenient when travelling.

Cat food pouches—cons

Uneaten food in the bowl dries out quickly.
Feeding takes longer and there is more hassle involved than with dry food.
Once opened, the pouch contents must be consumed within 2 days.
Pouches contain more water and are therefore less economical.

A good diet is essential - choose pouches with a high meat content

If you want quality food for your kitty, choose pouches containing plenty of meat.

The food should not contain any unnecessary ingredients such as oils, spices, or preservatives.
Read the label the ensure there are no animal ingredients of unknown origin, such as hooves, feathers, or horns.
The best cat food pouches contain very little grain, corn, or soy that cats can’t fully digest.

Wet cat food does contain water, but keep an eye on the water intake

Pouches and canned food for both kittens and adult cats contains more than 80% water, so your cat is unlikely to suffer from dehydration. However, it’s important to ensure that your kitty’s water bowl always remain full – proper water intake prevents urinary tract and kidney problems, which are very common in cats.

Switch it up sometimes – even high-quality food can get boring

Even if you buy quality cat food, we recommend that you sometimes alternate the brand and flavour. Cats are picky eaters and they can easily get bored of the same food. In addition, by alternating food you will make sure your kitty receives a balanced diet full of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

What pouches should you choose for your kitten? Young cats need different nutrition than adults

Are you wondering what kitten pouches should you buy and whether there is any real difference between them? There is and the difference is significant. An adult cat needs a different amount of nutrients than a kitten. Also, large and small cats need a different amount of food as well.

A small cat has tiny jaws, so the food chunks must be small enough to be chewable. You also have to remember that it shouldn’t get all that much food, due to its lower energy expenditure.
A large cat needs to receive a nutrient-rich diet to keep the joints healthy. The food chunks can also be larger and the cat needs more food in general.
