Rooibos and its history
Rooibos is a perennial plant with finely needle-like leaves, growing to a height of around 1 m. It comes from the Cedarberg region in the Western Cape of South Africa. The tea leaves are collected about 35 cm above the ground and are then fermented similarly to black tea. Contains high-quality tannins (4.5–6%), amount of trace elements and minerals (iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, fluorine, molybdenum, etc. ), aspalathin, flavonoids, organic acids, vitamin C and other substances. There are no known contraindications or serious side effects, which is why it is also suitable for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women. It does not contain caffeine. The history of rooibos dates back to 1804, when Benjamin Ginsberg convinced the Cape Boers to collect wild nati, which they later began to cultivate. The original method of collecting and drying comes from South African natives, probably the Maasai.
