Garment Steamers

A garment steamer is a device that lets you easily remove wrinkles from clothes that cannot be ironed in the normal way. Steamers are commonly used on evening wear made of delicate fabrics, but you can use them all over your home. A steamer can iron and smooth curtains or even couch blankets without any risk of scorching. And since it does not require an ironing board, you can even steam your clothes hanging on clothes hangers.

Steamer types

  • Handheld steamers - light and easy to use. Can be used at home or on the road.
  • Full size steamers - have a built-in hanger to hold clothes in place. Fairly large compared to handheld steamers and more difficult to use, but depending on the water tank size they can provide you considerably more steaming time.

What to focus on when buying a garment steamer

Steam output

  • Higher steam output = faster and easier removal of wrinkles and creases on garments.
  • Steam output indicates the amount of steam a steamer continuously generates.
  • For household steamers, steam output generally ranges between 20 and 40 g/min.

Power consumption

  • 1000 W - 1500 W steamers are suitable for steaming soft and delicate materials.
  • Steamers with a wattage 1500 W and more can handle all fabrics, including suits or wool.

Water tank size

  • A larger water tank allows you to use the device for longer.
  • Water tank volume can range from 0.20 l to 2 l or more.
  • A 600 ml water tank gives you 30 to 45 minutes of uninterrupted steam ironing.

Useful features

  • Thermostat - lets you control steam temperature. Set the temperature to match the type of fabric you are planning to steam. Delicate fabrics require lower temperatures; unyielding and thick fabrics need higher.
  • ECO Mode - the steamer switches off automatically after being left idle for some time, saving energy.
  • Steam intensity levels - the more wrinkled the fabric, the more steam you need. The number of intensity levels varies depending on the model and brand.
  • Automatic cleaning - a steamer cleans itself automatically when you press a corresponding button. This prolongs the device’s lifespan. The cleaning mechanism may vary depending on the model and brand, so it is recommended that you study the feature in detail once you find a specific model that interests you.

Garment steamers do not need an ironing board. But keep in mind the weight of the device. Steamers with a large water tank can be quite heavy, making their handling more difficult.
